SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The first day of pool play concluded at the 26th Annual NAIA Volleyball National Championship with little surprises.  The tournament is being hosted by Point Loma Nazarene University and is being staged on campus in Golden Gymnasium.

 

Defending national champion California Baptist University went 2-0 on the day in its quest for a second consecutive title.  Top-seeded Fresno Pacific University (Calif.) also went 2-0 as the Sunbirds are striving for an undefeated season.  FPU currently sports a 36-0 season record.

 

The third seed, Madonna University (Mich.), had a school record broken when senior outside hitter Natalja Tinina recorded 11 kills to break the school record for career kills with 2,860.  The No. 4 and 5 seeds also won as Dordt College (Iowa) and Missouri Baptist University each won the only game they played.

 

Sixth-seeded National American University (S.D.) was the only seeded team to lose as Savannah College of Art and Design (Ga.) handed the Mavericks only their second loss of the season.
