Women's Tennis Day 4 Recap

The 2008 NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship is down to two teams

May 15, 2008

SEMIFINAL RESULTS

MOBILE, Ala--It will be déjà vu at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center Friday, May 16th as Auburn-Montgomery and Fresno Pacific both advanced to the 2008 NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship final with victories in Thursday's semifinal action.

The meeting will mark the third-consecutive year that the two teams will meet for the championship match. The Lady Senators of Auburn-Montgomery took each of the past two meetings 5-1, and 5-3. The Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific will be looking for their first title, while the Lady Senators will be looking for their ninth title.

Auburn-Montgomery advanced first by knocking off Vanguard 5-1 at the Mobile Convention Center, after rain forced the teams to move from the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center. While, having only three courts available slowed things down, the Lady Senators made quick work of Vanguard.

The Lady Senators took No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take an early lead and then picked up victories at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 singles to advance. Vanguard got its lone point from the No. 2 doubles team of Jelena Jovic and Betyel Tesfa.

Thursday's second women's matchup looked like it would be quicker than the first, but Lindsey Wilson made life tough for the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific.

The Sunbirds swept doubles and then took No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-0 to take a commanding 4-0 lead. But, Lindsey Wilson fought back as Fadzai Mawisire defeated Anna Karavayeva 7-5, 6-4 in No. 2 singles, and Candela Castanon took down Angelina Minova in three sets at No. 1 singles.

That left No. 4, 5 and 6 on the court to decide the final team to advance, and while the No. 4 and 6 slots were starting to head in Lindsey Wilson's favor, Fresno Pacific's Amandine Ferot polished off a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles over Laurie Anciaux to clinch the win for the Sunbirds.

Friday's match will take place at 10:00 am.
