SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Fourth-ranked British Columbia posted a 312, the best round of the day, to assume the lead at the halfway point of the 2008 NAIA Women's Golf National Championship, which is being played at the Lake San Marcos Country Club. The Thunderbirds' two-round total of 630 gives them a slim three-stroke lead.

                                                                   

British Columbia is looking to sweep the NAIA golf titles as the UBC men won the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship last week. Oklahoma City swept the men's and women's titles in 2006 and 2007.

 

After shooting an 84 yesterday, Alyssa Human led the way for the Thunderbirds today as she came in with a team-best three-over 75, bolstered by a trio of birdies. Kayla Inaba shot a 78, and Marianne Banton carded a 79. Melissa Core rounded out UBC's day with an 80.

 

Third-ranked Embry-Riddle (Fla.) shot a 313 and is tied with three-time defending champion Oklahoma City, which shot a 315, for second place at 633. Tournament-host Cal State San Marcos set the pace yesterday, taking the first round lead with a 311. However, the Cougars shot 326 today to fall into fourth. Bethel (Ind.) moved from 11^th to fifth after shooting a 316  today.

 

Embry-Riddle's Tara Allen put together a 74 today to assume the individual lead with a 150. Bethel's Shanna Page (75-78), who finished second last year, is tied with Carly Ludwig (78-75) of Cal State San Marcos for second at 153. Tennessee Wesleyan's Megan Cox is in fourth with a 154 (79-75), and five players are tied for fifth with a 155.

 

The 72-hole tournament runs through Friday, May 23.
