SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Lynnze Martinsen led Hastings College (Neb.) to a 70-51 victory over the College of Saint Mary (Neb.) in the second round of the 15th annual NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship tournament. The 2006 event is being held at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena in Sioux City, Iowa.
In a battle of Nebraska teams, Martinsen set the pace which CSM's Chelsea Malone matched.
Martinsen connected on 6 of 12 attempts from the field, including 5 of 9 from behind the arc and 5 of 7 from the free-throw line for a total 24 points. Malone was 6 for 11 from the field, scored 4 of 5 three-pointers and 5 of 7 free throws for a total 21 points.
However, Hastings shot 49 percent as a team while the Saint Mary team shot 34.5 percent.
Trailing 29-19 at halftime, Saint Mary cut Hastings' lead to six points on a triple by Malone with 6:12 remaining in the game. But Martinsen answered for the Broncos, hitting back-to-back threes to close the door on any late game heroics by the Flames.
The Bronco's Katie Dent pulled down 13 rebounds in the game moving her tournament total to 31 rebounds in just two games. Stacey Svoboda chipped in with a dozen points, shooting just over 50 percent for the game.
Malone was the only player to reach double figures for the Flames. Katie Jo Lawton added eight points. Angela Tejral was the only bench player to score for CSM. She finished with seven points.
With Hastings win the first quarterfinal match-up is set. The Broncos will face Dakota State University (S.D.) , 77-58 winners over Tabor College (Kan.). The teams will jump circle on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
