SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The first day of the 15th Annual NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship saw Deb Remmerde of Northwestern College (Iowa) set the tournament record for three-point field goals made in a game. She was 10 of 16 from beyond the arc and finished with 42 total points, one shy of the tournament record, in Northwestern's 93-78 win over Iowa Wesleyan. The 16 attempts by Remmerde also tied an NAIA tournament record.
The day opened as No. 6 seed Dakota State University (S.D.) pulled off a mild upset over three-seed Shawnee State University (Ohio) 59-55. The Lady Trojans advance to take on second-seeded Tabor College (Kan.) who moved forward with a 65-58 victory over Eastern Oregon.
In a match-up featuring a pair of schools from Tennessee, Bryan College (Tenn.)defeated Bethel College (Tenn.) by a score of 73-68. The Lady Lions of Bryan will face top-seeded Cedarville University (Ohio) who cruised to a 83-39 victory over University of Maine-Fort Kent.
Three-seed Indiana Wesleyan University, an 81-53 winner against Warner Pacific College (Ore.), will take on Northwestern.
A pair of Nebraska teams will meet in the second-round, as College of St. Mary and Hastings College both advanced with wins on Wednesday. Five-seed College of Saint Mary advanced with a 64-48 win over fourth seeded MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.). Hastings College, a top-seed, moved on with a 70-43 victory over Jusdson (Ill.).
The 32-team, single elimination tournament continues Thursday, March 9, with the remaining eight games of the first round. Friday features eight games in the second round. Saturday is the quarterfinal round and Monday, March 13 is the semifinal round. The tournament concludes Tuesday, March 14 with the championship game at 8:30 p.m.
