May 16, 2006

MOBILE, Ala. - Vanguard University (Calif.) pulled the only upset of the day during second-round action at the 2006 NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship.  The Lions upended No. 7 Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) 5-3. The tournament, held May 15-19, is being staged at the Mobile Tennis Center for the third consecutive year.

Vanguard advances to the quarterfinal round and will face the No. 2 seed Auburn University Montgomery (Ala.), who posted a 6-0 victory in its second-round match. Top-seeded and defending national champion Azusa Pacific also advanced by posting a 5-0 victory against fellow conference member Point Loma Nazarene University (Calif.).  Two other teams posted shut out victories - Freed-Hardeman University (Tenn.), Embry-Riddle University (Fla.).

Three teams from the last two year's national title match remain in the hunt.  APU, Auburn Montgomery and College of Santa Fe (N.M.) all hope to reach the finals once again.  AUM leads the field with five national championships to its credit.

The tournament concludes on Friday with the championship match at 10 a.m. (Central).  This is the 55th year the NAIA has sponsored a national championship in men's tennis.  Azusa Pacific is going for its fourth consecutive appearance in the title match.
