DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Jeffrey Darkwah's second-half goal was all the third-seed Southern Nazaerene University (Okla.) Crimson Storm needed to post a 1-0 victory against No. 14 Lee University (Tenn.)in second-round action on Thursday at the 47th Annual NAIA National Championship hosted by Embry-Riddle University.
The match was closely contested through the first half with SNU edging the Flames 4-3 in shots and Lee recording the only corner kick of the half. But neither team was able to find the net, resulting in a scoreless tie at halftime.
The Crimson Storm finally broke the deadlock with a goal in the 72nd minute. Sean Williams' ball from the midfield stripe found Darkwah, who broke the Flames' offside trap and rifled a left-footed shot into the far side netting to give SNU the 1-0 win.
Southern Nazarene (18-1-1) advances to a 2:30 p.m. quarterfinal on Saturday, whey they will face the winner of Friday's second-round match between No. 5 Simon Fraser University (B.C.)and No. 11 Notre Dame.
The loss brings Lee's season to an end, as the Flames finish 20-5 overall.
