Halpen Sets New Course Record

OLATHE, Kan. - Todd Halpen from University of Victoria (BC) set a new course record at six under par (66).  His round consisted of seven birdies and one bogey.  The previous record of 68 was set in 2002.  Oklahoma City University leads the team competition with a one-over par 289.  The 2006 NAIA Men's Golf National Championships are being held at Prairie Highlands.

Oklahoma Christian University and Point Loma Nazarene University (Calif.) are tied for second place at 291.  University of British Columbia and Malone College (Ohio) are in fourth and fifth place respectively.

Six other players finished the day under par.  Corey Renfrew, University of British Columbia; Joe Prince, Point Loma Nazarene University (Calif.); and Brock Robillard, Lindenwood College (Mo.) finished the day at three-under par.  Grant Gates, Malone College (Ohio); Zach Wilson, Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.); and Garrard Weston, Oklahoma City University finished the day at one-under par.

2005 Individual medalist James Renner from Johnson and Wales University (Fla.) finished the day at four-over par (76).  Overland Park native Brad Gershon from Holy Names University (Calif.) shot a first round score of 78. 

The tournament field played the 7,045 yard, par 72 course at an average of five-over par and has recorded six eagles through the first round.  Second round tee times begin at 8 a.m. CST on Wednesday.  The 72-hole event continues through Friday May 19.  The field of 141golfers will be cut to the top 17 teams and 40 individuals after the completion of 54 holes.  Fans can follow live scoring at www.naia.org.  For complete team and individual results, visit www.naia.org.
