NAIA National Players of the Week - October 3, 2005

NAIA Football Players of the Week

 

Art Solis of Dakota State University (S.D.), Clayton Franks of Southern Nazarene University (Okla.) and Evan Granier of Lambuth University (Tenn.) were named the NAIA Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively, for October 1, 2005.

 

Solis led Dakota State to a 42-7 victory against South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.  The senior completed 17-of-29 passes for 232 yards and four touchdowns.  Originally from Merced, Calif., Solis also rushed for 124 yards on seven carries.  DSU improved to 2-4 on the year.

 

Franks, a 6'4", 245-lb defensive end recorded nine solo tackles in Southern Nazarene's 35-7 win against Haskell Indiana Nations University (Kan.).  The senior from Edmond, Okla. had seven tackles for a loss, including a school-record five sacks and a pass break-up, as Southern Nazarene improved to 3-2 overall.

 

Granier scored 13 of Lambuth's 25 points in a 25-21 win against the University of Virginia's College at Wise.  The 6'0", 215-lb kicker from Mayfield, Ky. connected on four-of-five field goals (49, 49, 36, 36) and added a PAT.  He averaged 40 yards per kickoff as Lambuth got its first win of the season, lifting the Eagles to 1-4 this year.

NAIA Soccer Players of the Week

 

Victor Rangel of Dakota Wesleyan University (S.D.) and Danielle Tanner of Virginia Intermont College are the NAIA Men's and Women's Soccer Players of the Week for the week ending October 2.

 

Rangel scored six goals in two victories for Dakota Wesleyan, including a hat trick against Northland College (Wis.).  The senior midfielder from Springdale, Ark., recorded four goals and one assist in the 7-0 Northland win and added two goals in a 4-2 victory against Upper Iowa University.  Dakota Wesleyan is 6-4 on the season.

 

Tanner, a sophomore from Pickering, Ohio, recorded two hat tricks to lead Virginia Intermont to a 3-0 record on the week.  The forward netted a total of eight goals in three victories and one assist on the week.  Her first hat trick came in a 4-1 win against then-ranked #22 Bethel College (Tenn.), which she followed up with a four-goal performance in a 9-0 win against Thomas University (Ga.).  Tanner scored one goal and assisted on another in a 3-1 win against Union College (Ky.).  Virginia Intermont improved to 6-5 this year.

NAIA Volleyball Players of the Week

 

Jamie Herr of Walsh University (Ohio), Ashley Ripple of St. Vincent College (Pa.) and Christine Wells of John Brown University (Ark.) have been selected as the NAIA Volleyball Player, Setter and Libero of the Week, respectively, for the week ending October 3, 2005.

 

As an outside hitter from Attica, Ohio, Herr led Walsh to a 3-0 record averaging 5.8 kills and 4.5 digs per game in victories against then #25 Mount Vernon Nazarene University (Ohio) (3-2), Shawnee State University (Ohio) (3-0) and Mount Union College (3-1).  The 5'9" junior recorded a career-high 30 kills in the match against Mount Union.  Walsh improved to 19-2 on the season.

 

Ripple averaged 14.7 assists and 4.1 digs per game as she helped St. Vincent go 4-0 this week.  The senior from Gibsonia, Pa., also averaged 1.4 kills as the Cavaliers dropped only one game during the week - a 3-1 victory against Notre Dame College (Ohio).  The three other wins were against Point Park University (Pa.), Daemen College (N.Y.) and University of Pittsburg-Johnstown as St. Vincent improved to 17-3.

 

Wells, a 5'7" senior, averaged 5.3 digs per game and recorded eight serving aces in helping John Brown to a 5-0 record on the week.  The defensive specialist from Red Oak, Texas recorded 35 digs as JBU dropped two games against Lindenwood University (Mo.), winning 3-2.  The other four match victories were won in three games - Bacone College (Okla.), Central Methodist University (Mo.), MidAmerica Nazarene University (Kan.) and Culver-Stockton College (Mo.).  John Brown is 18-4 on the year.
