NAIA Players of the Week - September 19, 2005



Cody Hoegh of Nebraska Wesleyan University, Joe Maresh of Valley City State University (N.D.), and Jarrod Nowman of St. Xavier University (Ill.) were named the NAIA Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Football Players of the Week for the week ending September 19, 2005.

Hoegh, a 5'7, 180-lb running back from Aurora, Neb., tied two Nebraska Wesleyan school records as he rushed for 195 yards and scored four touchdowns on 21 carries in a 30-14 victory against Midland Lutheran College (Neb.). The four touchdown runs of 17, 13, 16 and 63 yards for 24 points scored both tied the school's current records. Then-#22 Nebraska Wesleyan remained undefeated at 3-0.

Maresh recorded 6.5 tackles for a total loss of 30 yards as Valley City State defeated Jamestown College (N.D.) 20-19 in the 100th meeting between the two schools. The 6'2, 215-lb junior defensive end from Glencoe, Minn. had 12 total tackles (five solo and 7 assisted) including three sacks and forced one fumble as VCSU improved to 3-0 on the year.

Nowman helped lift then-#14 St. Xavier University (Ill.) to a 37-14 win against Malone College (Ohio). The senior from Manteno, Ill. recorded four punt returns for a total of 150 yards, including a 70-yard return for a touchdown just minutes before half time. St. Xavier improved to 2-1 on the season.

Erick Oduor of Lee University (Tenn.) and Maylee Attin-Johnson of Cumberland University (Tenn.) were named the NAIA Men's and Women's Soccer Players of the Week for the week ending September 19, 2005.

Junior forward Oduor from Migori, Kenya. recorded four goals and three assists (11 points) to lead Cumberland to a 2-0 week. Oduor scored two goals and had two assists in the Flames' 5-1 win against Covenant College (Ga.) and also scored two goals and had one assist in the team's 6-0 win against Georgia Southwestern State University. Lee remains perfect at 9-0 on the season.

Attin-Johnson, a freshman from Trinidad & Tobago, scored two goals and had two assists in a 5-1 victory against Freed-Hardeman University (Tenn.). The forward also scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win against the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) before finishing off the week with a hat-trick, scoring three goals to go along with her two assists in the Bulldogs' 7-0 win against Brescia University (Ky.). Cumberland is 4-2-1 on the season.

Verania Willis of California Baptist University, Annie Jankowski of the College of St. Mary (Neb.), and Malinda Reese of Westmont College (Calif.) were named the NAIA Volleyball Player, Setter and Libero of the Week, respectively for the week ending September 19, 2005

Willis, a native of San Jose, Costa Rica, led her team to a perfect 2-0 record on the week, averaging 6.17 kills per game with a total of 37 in six games played. The sophomore outsider hitter posted a .429 hitting percentage. Willis also recorded 14 digs (2.33 per game) along with 11 total blocks.

Jankowski, a sophomore from Omaha, Neb., averaged 15.6 assists St. Mary went 3-0 during the week. The Flames posted 3-0 victories over Peru State College (Neb.), Haskell Indian National University (Kan.), and Park University (Mo.). Jankowski also recorded 33 digs and five total blocks in the three matches. St. Mary stands at 12-2 on the season.

Reese, a sophomore from San Carlos, Calif., helped Westmont post a perfect 2-0 record on the week. In nine games, she averaged 7.33 digs and broke the school record of digs in a match with 44. Westmont recorded wins against Point Loma Nazarene University (Calif.) (3-2) and San Diego Christian College (Calif.) (3-1). Westmont improved to 12-2 on the season.
