Meeting the Need
The NAIA Champions of Character program is a response to the deteriorating culture of sport in America.

Aggression in both professional and amateur sports has escalated to violence in many communities. Today's athletic environment is built on a "win at all costs" mentality. However, research indicates that youth of our nation are not responding favorably to that mindset. The benefits of sports participation are all but lost on a new generation of young people who see reports of unethical and unlawful behavior on every sports page in America.
More than 52 million boys and girls participate in organized sports in the United States. However, studies show that more than 70% of youth give up traditional team sports by the age of 13, citing poor relationships with coaches and parents as the determining factor.
Character development is successful in academic and athletic environments
Having long been associated with accomplishing change through athletics, the NAIA intentionally teaches character through sports as an extension of classroom learning with its Champions of Character program.
By utilizing its member universities as Champions of Character Program Centers, the NAIA reaches out into communities to bring training to youth sports organizations, school districts and community groups.
The Champions of Character program aims to address issues of character values more comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The program trains coaches, administrators and parents to create a positive environment that nurtures personal growth and fun sport activity for youth.
